Why is it called dirty anyway?

Its been ages since the last time I ate dirty ice cream. I still see few of  this roaming here in the province but I refuse to buy a cup. I've heard dirty stories about it and its freaking scary.

  11. So why is it called dirty ice cream? Maybe some makers made them the dirty way. But my husband's uncle is an ice cream maker and the make it clean and definitely tidy so i don't call it dirty ice cream. when i was young, we call this "our flavor of the road" ice cream. :)
